Why do't more commuters car pool or cycle to beat the oil prices?

I got rid of our second car and began cycling. No more parking fees, gas pumps, and car babysitting. Never have felt better. Why do't more commuters car pool or cycle to beat the oil prices?
You must feel so liberated. I wish all could do the same but for some it is unreasonable. Soon enough, however, it will be necessary. People are not understanding that the planet is deteriorating. People are too comfortable driving their SUV's to work and look at carpooling as subordinate. With the average commute where I live, cycling is not an option. Good thing people like yourself are spreading the word. I now walk to school instead of driving it's only about an 18 min. walk. Why do't more commuters car pool or cycle to beat the oil prices?
i've never driven, but i'm gonna guess a car is a unique personal space. at the same time a protective cocoon from mother nature with life saving belts and airbags (odds on you surviving a collision with a tractor trailer on a bike isn't so good) but also a reflection of the self, from whatever you choose to hang from the rearview mirror to the music you choose to play and from time to time sing ineptly to.

guess i'm saying there's some kind of je ne sais quoi to automobile ownership.

as far as carpooling goes, i'm gonna guess people just don't want to be inconvenienced. with the getting up earlier and going out of their way and having to wait on people to get ready and get to the car, etc.
I would love to carpool but nobody lives near me from where I work.
